The New Silicon Valley Of The South

Food Safety is a complex business

Food Safety is a complex business

The sun belt of the United States is getting a makeover slowly and surely. The cotton fields of Huntsville and its surrounding areas are growing in leaps and bounds with engineers and other people with advanced degrees.

Georgia and Louisiana are also booming with new technology firms. I had an opportunity to speak with Walter who repairs Safeline Metal Detectors (and others) at Power Control Services while doing research for a article.

Power Control Services operates in a very vertical (niche) market. Food manufacturers need to make sure that when you buy for example, a bag of chips you don’t get a 1/2 inch bolt that fell off the machine.

To accomplish this goal on the assembly line they use a metal detector. The circuit boards that control said metal detector become defective just as any garden variety PC.

It turns out that the manufacturers are in the business of selling metal detectors. Repairing them does not make a profit the same way selling a new one does. So while the manufacturers will do out of warranty repair, they can be charged and a leg for service.

This creates a niche market in 3rd party repairs.

One such company in the south is the aforementioned Power Control Services, run by Walter. My interview with him reveal to me the complexity and demands on running the show. While they operate mainly out of Louisiana, they also have a specialized office in Georgia.

At first, that confused me. Walter explain to me that the manufacturing in Georgia is more specialized than the already specialized industry of metal detectors on a food production line. Honestly, that twisted my head a little bit. Specialization within a specialized industry.

And yet the opposite is also true. Power Control Services repairs logic boards for Safeline metal detectors and other manufacturers that compete with this firm.

Looking around ‘Rocket City’ (Huntsville, Alabama) revealed to me many dozens of similarly highly specialized manufacturing and engineering firms.

The advantages of the Sunbelt states are numerous. Lower cost of living, favorable climate, a variety of choices in outdoor recreational activities, are three of the long list of reasons. I found it intriguing enough to do further research.
